Kindness Matters

As we are bombarded with political ads describing how horrible the “other” candidate is, we need to remember that kindness matters.  It’s easy to get caught up in the name calling and tearing down of individuals whose views are different from our own, but we need to remember that we’re often more alike than different and treating each other with kindness and dignity creates a much better world.

At work, do you practice acts of kindness and encourage your staff to do the same or are you so busy focusing on productivity that you don’t have time for these “niceties”?

Failing to look up and appreciate your staff as individuals may lead to burnout or other mental health issues.  It does not take much time or energy to simply smile and say “Good Morning” or put a note on someone’s desk with an encouraging word or complement someone on a job well done.

How often does that happen in your company?

Every day you should be looking for some way to promote an atmosphere of compassion and thoughtfulness.  And you should encourage your staff to do the same.

Some companies set up various point systems or other methods of recognition for staff, and while those can be helpful, they must be meaningful.  Authenticity starts with leadership.  If managers are practicing care and consideration, it’s much more likely that staff will, too.

So, make sure you’re practicing acts of kindness every day.  It’s a way to promote the type of culture we need in today’s world.

Simple gestures of kindness can go a long way and we should practice these daily.
