The power of annual goals!

The year is flying by and it’s a good time to review annual goals! It’s easy to “set and forget” goals each year but if we don’t put definitive effort behind them, the years go by, but we haven’t moved forward.

How are you and your staff doing?  When’s the last time you reflected on lessons learned?   What have you done to improve yourself and/or your talents?

Don’t set expectations for lengthy discussions and in-depth analysis of the goals or you’ll never review them.  But have you made any progress?  Are there roadblocks that need to be discussed? Do the goals need to change for any reason?

The emphasis for you and your staff should be on taking advantage of learning opportunities.  What new skills have been introduced (or mastered)?  Any new certifications/licenses/research conducted? What new experiences have been undertaken? Did someone lead a meeting for the first time? Make their first presentation? Take charge of a project?

These learning opportunities lead us to the next steps and keep us progressing.  We need to allow ourselves and our staff the time to devote to these experiences, or our day-to-day responsibilities will take over and we’ll be stuck in a rut.  Although the “rut” can feel comfortable, it’s the discomfort in trying new experiences that provides a spark and allows us to flourish.

So, step back, think about what you and your staff have done differently this year.  And then make plans to continue (or start) to improve/learn/grow.  Take a few minutes to celebrate the lessons (even if the learning experience was difficult).

We thrive from new encounters, good and bad. Providing fresh opportunities in annual goals leads to growth and creativity and helps avoid burnout.
