Acknowledging Adversity

We all have times of adversity that can do anything from sidetrack us momentarily to changing the course of our lives. It’s important to acknowledge adversity and the effect it has on us and those around us. When our employees face adversity, managers should do what they can to be supportive.
It’s easy to take for granted our daily tasks and schedules and go about our work without appreciating the good things we have. In addition, we may take our staff for granted, expecting them to show up and produce each day, failing to express acknowledgement for their dedication and work.
When you or your staff have difficult times, do you have an employee assistance program (EAP) to offer as a resource? Many benefit vendors, especially if you offer life insurance or disability benefits, provide free EAP services with counseling and other resources available for difficult situations. These can be helpful in hard times.
There are also volunteer organizations that provide services ranging from counseling to financial help to emergency shelters. Have their information available for you and your staff.
Adversity reminds us that many things are beyond our control. We don’t know what’s going to happen from day to day as there are no guarantees. We can go through our lives with our heads down or choose to appreciate what we have in the moment. When we or someone around us goes through trying times, reach out for support and comfort.
Most of us have a lot to be grateful for in our lives. We shouldn’t wait for problems to realize how much we have. And when we know someone else is going through something difficult, be supportive (however that looks). We need to treat each other with kindness and empathy.
