Live in the moment

As managers, it’s important to live in the moment. Life is flying by at a rapid pace for most of us, and it’s easy to lose track of time. Living in the moment allows us to enjoy fleeting moments of opportunities that can provide meaning, spark creativity and/or encourage laughter, things we can all use.
Remembering to pause occasionally is a good lesson for our teams. Getting too caught up in our projects or tasks can mean we lose sight of what we’re trying to accomplish. Encourage your staff to periodically take stock of what they’re doing and why and reconsider how they’re moving forward.
Sometimes taking a step back can provide new perspectives, allowing us to increase our productivity or perhaps help us see if we’re wasting time on something no longer needed. Encourage a mid-day break to consider what’s been accomplished so far and what the plans for the rest of the day are. Maybe everything is appropriate and good, but maybe we need to change direction.
Talk with staff about daily priorities to make sure you’re all on the same page. Consider time wasters, including things that seem necessary but take an inordinate amount of time or energy. Are they vital? Are there alternatives?
Moving full speed ahead can be good and required at times, but not all day every day. Living in the moment can provide clarity that can be missed if we don’t step back periodically.
We all want productivity, but it needs to be targeted. Encourage staff not to get so caught up in everyday habits and activities that they don’t see opportunities.
