Plan Forward with Staff

What’s it mean to plan forward with staff?  We spring forward with clocks and plan our summer travel, but why should we plan forward with our employees?

It’s easy to get caught up in daily requirements and the lists we have of tasks that we must complete to simply get by, but if we’re not keeping our head up and our eyes forward, the days fly by and we often look back and question what we’ve actually accomplished.

Each day should devote some time to looking forward and not down.  As you sit to plan your day, whether it’s at the beginning of the day or the end before shutting down, make sure you spend a few minutes on longer term goals.  What do you want to accomplish this week? This month? This year?  And how are you moving that needle forward?

Encourage your staff to do the same.  Make sure they have the goals they developed during their reviews front and center.  Where are they with those?  What have they done to accomplish them?  What deadlines have been set and met and which need to be adjusted?

We talk about being goal oriented and should encourage continual learning, but that doesn’t come without some commitment.  We have to make planning a priority and expectation, otherwise, it’s easy to let life get in the way and not appreciate how valuable time is.

So look up and plan forward and encourage your staff to do the same.  Leaders need to be examples, so show that you are committed to moving ahead to better serve your staff and their goals.

Looking into a crystal ball can be fun, but we need to plan forward to get ahead!
