What is a productive meeting?

When’s the last time you thought about the meaning of a productive meeting? I was reading an article this weekend about “bad” meetings, leaving lingering negative effects on attendees. It made me think about the preponderance of meetings many of us have in our lives and when we’ve last thought about their purpose and productivity.
It’s easy to take regularly scheduled meetings for granted, knowing they are a standard part of our week, but how many are really productive? When have we revisited the purpose and thought about the possibility of making a change? Maybe we can handle the passing of information via email or maybe limit the attendees so that not everyone needs to attend?
Have we encouraged our staff to set expectations of productivity in relation to meetings? We talk about setting agendas and ensuring a leader for the meeting, we may even have accountabilities set at the conclusion. But was the meeting even required? Do we spend too much time rehashing things that can be handled differently?
In today’s world of too much information and too little time, we need to rethink how we’ve been accomplishing things. Revisit your meetings and work with your staff to ensure the time spent is productive and necessary.
You could save valuable time to use in more meaningful ways.
