What does it mean to consider your team’s purpose in the organization? Businesses are established for various reasons, offering products or services as their primary function. But does your staff understand their role in the business product and how they help make it happen?
Do your employees feel appreciated and recognized in promoting organizational success? Do they see their roles as vital? Or does your team see themselves as the underdog in the organization as they’re not in direct product or service support?
Many times, specific departments get the accolades: “Wow Marketing/Sales! You did a great job bringing in additional revenue!” Or “Way to go, research and development! The product upgrades are sure to be a hit with our customers!” Or “Congratulations, Account Service! You were touted as a vital contributor to our client’s success!”
These are all important and should be recognized, but how many times have you heard “Way to go, Finance! You rocked that budget!” or “Nice job, operations! You really increased efficiencies”?
It can be easy to take the roles that keep the wheels spinning for granted, but that doesn’t help with motivation. If your team doesn’t feel important, how do you expect them to maintain a positive work culture and strive for continuous improvements?
It’s essential that we recognize all roles within a company as each is vital to success. If they weren’t, we wouldn’t bother filling the positions. When the company achieves success, it’s appropriate to call out those who did above and beyond, but don’t forget that they couldn’t have done their part if they didn’t have organizational support.
Rethink your team’s purpose and make sure you and they understand that the business would not triumph without them!
