Most managers want to encourage productivity in staff, but what are they doing about it? First, do you know what the means—do you have productivity measures or is it just a gut feel? If you do have measures, do the staff know what they are and are you reinforcing them? Are they tied to performance reviews and/or compensation?
We all want to be productive and have productive staff, but sometimes the effort to get there feels overwhelming. If we don’t really comprehend what productivity means in quantitative terms, we’re likely just spinning our wheels.
Do yourself and your staff a favor. Look at each role and define productivity for each. Utilize AI if needed to generate ideas for measurements. Prioritize the measurements based on your organizational needs and goals to establish Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for each role. What is the most important aspect(s) of a job? Why are you paying that person to work for your organization?
It’s easy to think that our staff inherently knows what they need to do and why, but that isn’t always the case. Goals and emphasis change over time and if we’re not communicating the current need, we may not be on the same page. Develop KPIs with your staff, talking about priorities and why they make a difference.
Conversing with staff about where we’re going and how we plan to get there can help encourage ownership and purpose. We are each more invested when we see what difference our efforts make. Don’t underestimate the importance of ensuring staff know their role in an organization and reiterating that from time to time.
Discuss productivity with your staff and make sure they understand what it means to them, you and the organization as a whole.
