Motivate your staff

Time flies by and days run together, so how do we motivate staff on an ongoing basis?  How do you continually prevent jobs from becoming rote and encourage new ideas and processes?

First of all, don’t assume your staff are happy.  Even those with long tenure may surprise you with unstated frustrations.  How are you getting feedback from staff?  Do you have an environment of trust where feedback is meaningful?  Or are you likely to get no comments or misleading ideas that don’t really convey how staff are doing?

As a leader, do you express motivation or do you walk around with a frown and obvious frustrations showing, only stopping to criticize?  If that’s the case, or if your criticisms outweigh positive comments, challenge yourself with saying only positive things for a day or a week.  Even if things go wrong, try to find a bright side to point out while resolving issues.

Are you open to new ideas or do you dismiss suggestions assuming they’ll be create work?  Do you praise staff for suggesting opportunities, even if they’re not put into action?

We all want motivated and productive staff, but we’re often not willing to make the efforts ourselves to encourage this.  Task yourself with learning something new each week and challenge your staff to do the same.  Learning new things can spark motivation and creativity. Talk about what you learned in meetings to keep the momentum going.

If your culture doesn’t encourage honesty, change it!  Take steps today to start moving the needle in a way that rewards positivity and creativity.  Make a point to acknowledge staff who speak up and suggest ways to make improvements, even if they’re not on target!

By encouraging honesty, creativity, and learning, we’re moving toward more motivated staff.  This helps with productivity and growth.

Neon sign on a dark background reads "Do Something Great" in white glowing letters, conveying an inspirational and motivational mood.
We all need a boost once in a while, remember to look for and provide motivation to staff!
