There’s been a lot of discussion about AI and how it will affect our lives, and I’ve seen various articles discussing whether Human Resources (HR) will be replaced with AI. Some articles are definitive that it’s going to happen while others are skeptical.
I’m of the stance that AI is an exciting new tool for us to utilize that can automate some of the tasks that add value to our employees. Does that mean it can/will take over some HR duties? Absolutely! And that’s exciting!
From what I’m hearing/seeing from AI (and I am not close to being considered an AI novice, much less an expert), it can be a resource for individuals joining an organization, providing answers about culture, supplies, policies, all kinds of things new hires may need as well as providing benefit information so employees can ask questions 24/7. These were tasks often taken by HR and will now be needed in a more limited basis.
That means HR has more time on their hands to do more strategic planning that can better help organizations develop and flourish. Rather than being drawn into the details that are important in our employees’ lives, HR can be forward thinking and spend time on individual and operational growth and development needs.
We shouldn’t mourn the loss of these tasks, but instead, celebrate the gain of time for greater utilization of our strengths. I have never met an HR person who has not talked about their limited time in getting things done. So why would we be concerned about something that can provide additional hours in our day?
Change can be scary and it’s easy to take a pessimistic view that it will make things worse. But from where I stand, it’s an exciting creation that will lead to possibilities we’re only beginning to see.
Will HR be replaced with AI? Only if we choose to ignore the freedom it will allow.
