Revisit personal and employee goals

The year is past the half-way mark and what have you done with your personal and/or your employees’ goals?  Have you talked about them lately?  Or are they the New Year’s requirements that get created and then shoved in a drawer?

We’re all so busy these days it’s incredibly easy to lose sight of time passing.  But if we don’t look up and check out our direction from time to time, we may not get to where we wanted to go!

I’ve had the “fun” of participating in triathlons (I’d say “competing,” but yeah, not so much; my goal is finishing), and one of the things I learned in training was to make sure to note my direction in open water swims.  As a weak swimmer at best, the last thing I want to do is drift off path and be forced to swim longer distances!  But that’s what we often do for ourselves and our employees.  We don’t look up at our markers and realize we’re not progressing (or going the wrong way)!

Goals can take many shapes (physical, financial, career, spiritual) and reaching forward can help us find more meaning and satisfaction in our lives.  We need to encourage growth for ourselves and our staff. Goals help personalize the reach.  We all have different objectives and/or motivations; we need to remember to feed them so they don’t wither away.

Have you made any progress in your plans for 2024?  Have you shared them (and the associated wins and struggles) with your staff?  Have you encouraged your staff to grow in the direction they chose or helped them overcome roadblocks?

Anyone who’s participated in a team sport can understand the motivation that comes from working together.  Goals may be individualized, but if we help each other achieve success, we can all celebrate the victories.  Teamwork provides resources and/or motivation in overcoming barriers.

Relook at your 2024 goals and have your staff do the same.  Decide one thing you can do in the next month to help you move forward (and/or celebrate your wins if you’re still on target or ahead)!

Keeping our heads down only encourages us to swim downstream.
