As we get closer to the end of the year, what type of year-end reflection can lead to new year success? How can you wrap up the year in ways that encourage future success?
Most of us believe we have more than enough on our plates already, and the thought of taking on more isn’t exactly motivational. But if we step back and take some time to plan and evaluate where we are and what we’ve done, we can make our lives a little easier moving forward.
How’s the budget? Are you where you expected? If not, what have you done or are you doing about it? Have you talked with your staff about financial successes/struggles?
What about employee skills? Have you taken a moment to consider your staff talents? Are you using them in the best ways? Are you cultivating new skills or strengthening others?
What specifics have you accomplished this year? Have you given any thought as to how to celebrate your successes? Have you thanked your staff for their role in it? If the year wasn’t great, have you talked openly about what you’ve learned and how you plan to move forward in the next year to greater success? Have you given your staff a chance to weigh in?
Is your staff closer as a team or further apart? What are you doing about that? Does each member of your team know where they stand and what’s expected of them? Do you have any stars that you’re encouraging to burn brighter and/or any black holes that you’re working to close (through either an expectation of improvement or a harmonious farewell)?
If you don’t take the time to reflect on where you’ve come, you’re not likely to go far moving forward. You want your team to take the journey with you, so make sure they’re packing the right tools so they have what they need when they get there!
Year end is a great time for reflection and planning. Don’t let the time get away from you!
